While Gordie and I were out on a walk, we picked up leave, pinecones and sticks to use for a Fall sensory box. It was a little harder than I had expected to get the leaves, most of the trees still hadn’t started to drop them, but it was still fun. We also used some other items from around the house.
What’s inside?
- leaves
- pinecones (check them for sticky sap)
- sticks
- fork (rake)
- small bowl
- small gourds
- decorative corn
- large rock
This bin wasn’t as bit a hit as the last one. The process of creating it was a lot more engaging for him than the bin itself. I also think it would have been better with a larger quantify of leaves so you could really run your fingers through them and rake them around. I think we’ll try it again when more leaves have fallen.

I love this box Dana! Fall leaves are one of my favorite things about the season. The colors, the crunch, the smell…can’t wait to have a pile big enough to let Max jump into!

At Moira’s preschool they filled the water table with leaves this week and hid bugs in it – mostly wooden lady bugs. Let me tell you – it is a hit this week so if you have some fake bugs you could hide them amoung the leaves sometimes to change things up a big.

@melanie That’s awesome! I’m totally going to try leaves, bugs and water next time we go picking leaves.

There is no water in the “water table” when they have leaves in it. It’s just that it is usually a water table but sometimes they change it up a bit. This week it was just leaves and bugs. I imagine that adding water would get a bit messy.

@melanieoh I totally didn’t get that. It sounded so fun with the floating leaves. I think I still might try it.
