Get Ready to Spring Forward Important Calendar Reminders Every Parent Should Have

Get Ready to Spring Forward Important Calendar Reminders Every Parent Should Have

March 8, 2017 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

I am a brand ambassador for the 2017 year with Church & Dwight. As part of this program I receive monetary compensation as well as products to review.

March 12th marks the beginning of Daylight Savings Time – the day we welcome a much needed extra hour of sunlight after a long, dark and dreary winter! For many, this extra hour of sun, along with the warming temperatures, means that more time is spent outdoors, making it sometimes challenging for parents to stay ahead of those not-so-top-of-mind household tasks.

To help you stay on track this spring and to build better habits all year long, consider placing a calendar in a high traffic area of your home – such as the kitchen or foyer – and place monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly reminders for the following tasks:

Replace toothbrushes: The Canadian Dental Association recommends you change your toothbrush every three months[1]. Place a smiley face sticker at the start of every third month of the year to remind you to buy new brushes for your family.

Check medicine expiry dates: Remember that all medicines expire, including vitamins and supplements. To ensure your medicine cabinet is up to date, schedule a simple calendar reminder for twice a year. This will remind you to check the expiry date and re-stock, if necessary.

Change the baking soda in your fridge: Placing a box of Arm & Hammer™ Fridge-n-Freezer™ or Fridge Fresh™ Baking Soda in your fridge or freezer helps to eliminate odours and keeps your fridge smelling fresh. While many use this simple tip, it can be easy to forget when it’s time to replace the open box. When you purchase a new box, jot down a replacement reminder on the box for a month’s time to maintain maximum odour elimination, ensuring your food stays fresher, longer.

Keeping healthy: Simple healthy habits, such as getting all of the required amount of fruits and veggies or taking vitamins, can slip our minds during hectic days. Vitafusion™ Vitamin D is a great addition to your routine, especially during the fall and winter months, when heavy clothes and cloudy weather can inhibit the production of Vitamin D in the body. To ensure your body gets all the Vitamin D it needs try placing a reminder in your calendar at the start of the fall season to start taking a supplement.  Very few foods naturally contain this vitamin, meaning a supplement may be the best way to get your necessary intake[2]. Known as the sunshine vitamin, Vitamin D supports bone and teeth health – Vitafusion™ Vitamin D also comes in a delicious gummy and is the perfect alternative to a traditional hard-to-swallow pill.

Keeping a family calendar is a lifesaver for many families. What are some of your calendar reminders and tips that you think families should consider?

Planning and prepping for a family? Questions and answers to get you started #sponsored

February 28, 2017 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

I am a brand ambassador for the 2017 year with Church & Dwight. As part of this program I receive monetary compensation as well as products to review.

Whether you’re considering becoming a parent for the first time or having a second (or third), it’s an experience that can be both exciting and scary at the same time.

How long will it take to get pregnant? Should I start tracking my cycle? How do I care for a newborn? Will I ever fit into those skinny jeans again… all good questions and while I don’t have all of the answers, here are a few questions and answers to get you started and on the right track.

  1. How can I keep track of my cycle? Simple! Pick up a First Response® Digital Ovulation Test, which predicts your most fertile days based on your personal LH surge. Remember that the best time to start tracking your cycle is before you start trying to conceive. Your two most fertile days begin with the LH surge and you are most likely to get pregnant if you have intercourse within 24-36 hours after you detect your personal LH surge.

Don’t panic if you’ve never heard of your LH surge before! I didn’t know what it was either. If you’re curious, visit firstresponse.com for more info.

  1. I think I may be pregnant. Now what? Anxious to find out if you’re pregnant? The First Response™ Early Result Pregnancy Test can tell you if you’re pregnant up to six days before your missed period. If you’re interested in sharing the news with friends and family, how you share it is up to you!
  1. Who will take care of me during my pregnancy? It’s important to determine if you would like a doctor or midwife (or someone else) to care for you during your pregnancy. There are many different options. Pick the person who you feel most comfortable with and don’t let friends or family sway your decision.
  1. What should I pack in my hospital bag? There are lots of great suggestions for the must-have hospital bag items. I suggest starting your research on Pinterest. Pick a list that feels right to you and start shopping/collecting the items. You’ll want to have the bag packed and ready to go well before your bundle of joy is set to arrive.
  1. How else can I prepare? The most important tip is to enjoy the experience and make sure to take time for yourself! Whatever that means for you. Maybe you unwind after a busy day with a good book and a cup of tea. Or plan a weekend getaway and sneak away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Or just curl up on the couch and watch your favourite movie.

Before you know it, you’ll be holding your little one in your arms. Nine months went by quickly and being prepared is essential, especially as you tackle sleepless nights and dozens of diaper changes! I suggest stocking up on the essentials – diapers, baby clothes and receiving blankets are a must. Don’t forget to also stock the medicine cabinet with diaper cream and something to help with colic, such as OVOL™ Drops, which is a simple, alcohol-free solution that can be added to a bottle or used on its own. It helps relieve discomfort caused by trapped gas, making it easier for babies to pass gas and burp at feeding time. Don’t forget to ask your doctor first to find out if this product is right for your new baby!

Taking the Kids on a Food Adventure – Picky Eater Strategy

January 30, 2017 by danawyyc 3 Comments

great

One day I decided to try to sell my kids on the idea of being Food Adventurers. We weren’t going to a new restaurant, we were going on a Food Adventure! We weren’t trying trying new suspicious looking foods, we were having a food adventure!

I’ve found this to be very successful and we continue to use this concept all the time. My kids have not magically turned into little foodies, but I get a lot more buy in from them and using the process I’ve outlined below I have been able to get them to try just about anything. They’ve even found they’ve really liked some things they were pretty sure they weren’t going to like.

Trying New Foods as a Food Adventurer

As a parent, take the pressure off. Expect them to explore and discover the food not necessarily to eat it. We say the steps out loud and I will often do the steps with the kids too.

  1. Touch it (pick it up, poke it)
  2. Look at it
  3. Smell it
  4. Listen to it
  5. Lick it
  6. Bite it
  7. Chew it

We don’t always get through all the steps but that’s okay. Particularly with foods that they are really resistant to, maybe even having it on their plate is a big deal. Don’t be afraid to try it again another day (again and again and again). Repeated stress-free exposure (and this can be 20 or more times) has been shown to increase acceptance over time.

But sometimes it works right away. Sometimes a food they were worried might be spicy, turns out to be something they love. It’s quick, easy and can be done anywhere.

One time we used this at a barbecue restaurant – we ordered a platter so there was lots of choices and the kids did a food adventure with many meats and sides and they each found a few things that they loved (and  a few that they didn’t. It is now one of their favourite restaurants.

Peak Travel Time – Hidden Gems to Pack for a Family Vacation

December 1, 2016 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

I am a brand ambassador for the 2016 year with Church & Dwight. As part of this program I receive monetary compensation as well as products to review.

Christmas vacation, reading week and March break make winter an easy time for Canadian families to jet away and get some much needed R&R. Unfortunately, for many parents the thought of planning a family vacation is stressful and overwhelming – dampening the overall excitement of the trip.

Creating the perfect packing list is key to having a successful family getaway. Often families create a huge list full of extravagant items they never actually use, and accidently forget the hidden everyday gems they cannot live without.  Below are some must-have products to include in your suitcase this season. These products are often left behind at home, but are huge life savers when vacationing:

  1. Gravol™: Did you remember to bring plenty of books, movies and games for your upcoming flight or car ride, but forget about the winding roads and nausea that your trip has in store for you? Gravol™ Ginger tablets, lozenges or liquid gels are made with naturally-sourced, certified organic ginger and will help treat motion sickness, nausea, and upset stomachs. Keep them in your purse or carry-on and you will be good to go! They are easy to swallow and non-drowsy, ensuring you are energized and ready for a great vacation.
  2. Rub A535™: After a long day of sightseeing and exploring count on Rub A535™ to soothe all your aches and pains. Rub A535™ is the perfect example of an item you may have in your cupboard but may forget to pack! It will help soothe sore muscles and ensure you are ready to tackle whatever your next adventure is! Rub A535 comes in handy for beach vacations too – don’t say you have never woken up with back pain after falling asleep in a lounge chair!
  3. Warm clothes: One freezing cold tropical vacation and you will never JUST pack bathing suits and shorts again. Always throw an extra sweatshirt and a pair of pants in your suitcase.
  4. Batiste™ Dry Shampoo: New carry-on laws and weight restrictions mean packing all of your essential personal care items can be challenging.  Luckily Batiste™ Dry Shampoo is lightweight and ideal for your suitcase.  With no water required and just a few quick sprays, Batiste™ Dry Shampoo saves you time while travelling time by refreshing your hair between washes! Batiste™ Tropical Dry Shampoo has a coconut and exotic fragrance and will leave your hair feeling clean, revitalized and vacation ready!
  5. Granola bars and snack food: Whether you are going to an all-inclusive or renting a cottage for the week, treats are a must! Unusual routines may mean longer periods between meals and tired travelers. Keep a few granola bars in your purse to ensure everybody stays energized and positive.

Overall, every vacation should leave you feeling rejuvenated and ready for whatever the year has in store. Remember to stay organized, ask for help from the family and always pack your everyday favourite items – they will come in handy!

Protect Yourself This Cold and Flu Season

September 30, 2016 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

It’s nearly that time of year again – the dreaded cold and flu season. For most, enduring the sniffles, aches and pains of the common cold is just a minor inconvenience though catching the flu can be more serious. Chances are, if you don’t take proactive steps to prevent it, you will catch it. To help keep you feeling your best and win the war against germs this sniffle season, here are a few suggested tips.

Avoid the Spread of Germs

Germs often spread when someone touches a contaminated item and then touches their eyes, nose or mouth. When in public spaces, try to avoid touching your face with your hands as much as possible. Always make sure you wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water on a regular basis and keep alcohol-based hand sanitizers in your purse and in your children’s backpack for added protection.

Disinfect Commonly-Touched Areas

Germs can linger on hard surfaces for hours or days after being contaminated, which is why it’s important to keep high traffic areas like counter tops, door knobs, sinks and faucets clean. You’ll also want to be diligent in disinfecting telephones, remote controls, door knobs and light switches.

Take Your Vitamins to help maintain immune function

To help your body get all the essential vitamins and nutrients to maintain good health, try Vitafusion™ Men’s or Women’s Complete Multivitamin. Each formula is specifically designed to meet the needs of men or women. Vitafusion Women’s includes calcium and vitamin D. Calcium helps keep bones strong and healthy. Vitafusion Men’s contains B vitamins to help convert food to energy.  L’il Critters™ Despicable Me Minion Made™ and Lil Critters™ Barbie™ Complete Multivitamin Gummies are a great way for kids to get a boost in their diet. These fun character shaped gummies are packed with essential nutrients that help maintain good health and provide a fun way to support your kid’s immune function.  Kids will also love the great taste that comes from naturally sourced flavours.

Skip a Workout

If you feel like you might be getting sick but aren’t sure, avoid going to the gym. While it may seem like a good idea to sweat it out, your body needs all of its extra resources to fend off whatever virus or bacteria you’ve been exposed to so it’s important to save your energy.

Don’t Drink Alcohol

Avoid drinking alcohol for a few days if you’re feeling under the weather. Drinking large amounts of alcohol can affect your immune system so stepping back may help avoid coming down with something more serious.

Stay Hydrated

When feeling ill, it’s important to stay hydrated. Plenty of water and fluids may help to minimize the duration and severity of a cold or flu.

It’s no fun being sick. What are some other preventative measures you follow to help protect you and your family against colds and flu?

Forget kids! What parents are not looking forward to for back to school!

August 26, 2016 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

Much to the despair of our little ones, back-to-school time is fast approaching. The freedom and fun of summer will soon be over and the reality of routines and homework is about to start. While we’re eager to get the kiddies out of the house at last, the reality is that it comes with a few “drawbacks”:

Laundry: Summer comes with its fair share of stains but soon gym clothes and uniforms will take over – big time. If your kids wear a uniform to school, you know the importance of keeping these in good condition. There’s nothing worse than having to replace something mid-year. Then there are the extra-curricular activities…hello hockey jerseys and ballet leotards! These items are pricey and it’s important to care for them properly. What are the odds these items will make it through the school year? Step 1: beg and plead with your kids to treat these items with care (good luck!). Step 2: Equip yourself with a killer laundry arsenal that’s always at your fingertips. For example, stock up on OxiClean™ Colour Shield Liquid Laundry Stain Remover, it keeps colours looking their brightest. And OxiClean™ White Revive™ Stain Remover Powder has your whites covered as it’s specially formulated to maintain whites – without chlorine bleach! For inevitable stains, turn to OxiClean™ Laundry Stain Remover Spray and OxiClean™ Max Force™ Gel Stick to pre-treat in advance of your next laundry day.

Aches and pains: Real life will ramp up again quickly for you too. Whether you’re back at the office and adjusting to sitting at a desk all day or you’re just trying to keep up with your kids, topical pain relievers such as RUB·A535™ Extra Strength Heating Cream are essential to have on hand for those muscle aches and pains. It delivers fast-acting, warm, penetrating relief of muscle, joint, back and arthritic pain.

Cavities: Before you know it, Halloween will be approaching and then the Holidays are not far behind. For you this means an extra-long to-do list. For your kids, it’s the start of a regular diet of candy and chocolate so brushing their teeth will be key! When brushing is fun, your kids will want to brush their teeth! They’ll love the novelty of the moving brush head on Arm & Hammer™ Spinbrush™ Kids Battery Toothbrush and  designs such as My Little Pony™ and Paw Patrol™ will get them even more excited.

When we think about it some more, heading back to school really isn’t so bad! That being said, what are you not looking forward to the most?

Treatsbox Review – What’s more fun than candy in the mail?

April 12, 2016 by danawyyc 2 Comments

My family loves candy and in particular trying out new and different varieties. When Treatsbox.com asked if we wanted to try out one of their Treatsboxes we didn’t hestitate to say yes.

Treatsboxe.com ships from Canada and all their prices are in Canadian dollars. The Treatsboxes come in 2 sizes – regular (starts at $16.99 per month) and epic (starts at $33.99 per month) which is about twice as big.

You can order a single box (Sweet Solo) and it will ship in about 48 hours. Or you can sign up for a 3, 6 or 12 month subscription where you can a new box each month.

Treatsbox

When our epic Treatsbox arrived, my kids were dying to open it up. But I made them wait until their dad came home because I’m mean like that.

I really liked the variety of different candy that came – everybody could find lots of things they liked. There is also many things that I haven’t seen in a while or are hard to find without going to a specialty shop. One of the best things though is that the candy was all nice and fresh. Nothing was suffering from laying on a shelf too long.

Treatsbox

My son loves watching unboxing videos so was pretty excited to make one of his own. Check out him unboxing the April Regular Treatsbox below.

In our Treatsbox we got:

2 boxes of Good & Plenty
2 Rocky Road S’mores Bars
2 York Peppermint Patties
2 packages of doublemint gum
2 packages of mint lifesavers
2 packages of blackjack licorice chews
2 packages of Welch’s Fruit snacks
2 packages of Warheads Extreme Sour Hard Candy
2 Sugar Daddy Caramel pops
1 Fireball jawbreaker
2 sour soda bottles
Now and Later Chews
Big League Chews
Mario Yo-yo with Candy inside

Treatsbox

I was actually really impressed by the Treatsbox. We’re actually looking at signing up for the subscription service as a Mother’s day/Father’s day present. I know the kids are going to love the anticipation of the box coming and I think it might actually be easier to not buy other candy when we know this will be coming in the mail.

Keep your kids’ clothes vibrant – pass on the best hand-me-downs!

April 12, 2016 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

Looking at my entry way it seems to be spring again. Spring weather in Calgary can vary a lot so we have everything from vests, to light coats and rain jackets. And we still have all the Winter clothes hanging around too.

It’s definitely time to start putting away the snowpants and sorting through what fits from last year. Kids clothes are expensive so hand-me-downs are one of my favorite things. I always have a bin of too big clothes put away – some that my older kids are passing down and some from other family and friends.

Whether you are keeping your kids’ clothes in the family, giving them away or selling them, it’s important to keep the clothes in good shape. Here are some simple and affordable ways to keep your kid’s clothes in great condition, and hand-me-down ready:

  1. Host a clothing swap. Gather all your friends and have a clothes swap. Everybody can bring their kid’s old clothes that they have either outgrown or are simply tired of. It gives you and your friends the chance to catch-up and socialize while refreshing your kids wardrobe and saving money. Bonus: gather your friends who wear the same size as you do for a clothes swap of your own!
  1. Keep it in the family. At the end of every season, have your children pack away any clothes that are getting too small for them. Label the box with the date and season so in a few years, when your next child is ready for a new outfit, you know exactly where to find them. Make sure to wash everything before you store it away, so that it is clean and fresh when you pull it out of storage. Pro Tip: OxiCleanTM Foam Pre-treat rids your children’s clothes of tough dried on stains – even grease!
  1. Embrace the bold colours. Fun, bright and colourful spring clothes can lose their vibrancy quickly during the year – making it hard to pass them on. The right laundry detergent can go a long way in caring for clothes. Pro Tip: Upgrade from ordinary detergents and give your kids clothes a high definition clean with OxiCleanTM HDTMLaundry Detergent(available in liquid and paks). It will ensure your whites stay radiant and your colours vibrant.

Do you have any great tips for re-using old clothes and saving money?

Helping Canadians Get a Quality Night’s Sleep

March 23, 2016 by danawyyc 1 Comment

Did you know that March 6th to 13th is Sleep Awareness Week? Sleep or the lack of it is always something I end up thinking a lot about when I have a baby in the house. My littlest is now 14 months old and I am finally starting to get better sleep. At least some of the time. But now that I’m slightly less exhausted from my baby, sometimes I have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep and he is not to blame at all!

I hope that you never have trouble getting a good night’s sleep but if you do, below are a list of suggested tips that may help sleepy-eyed Canadians get some quality (and well deserved!) shut-eye.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Make simple changes in your life to help develop a more positive state of mind. Organize, prioritize and give yourself a break every so often. When you have less to worry about, your sleep is less likely to suffer.

Get Up and Get Active

Consider adding daily exercise to your morning routine or sometime in your day. Regular physical activity will help you fall asleep faster and deeper.

Create Tranquility

Make your bedroom a sleeping oasis. Avoid eating, working or watching TV in bed. This way your body will start to associate the bed with meaning it’s time to sleep.

Limit Naps or Power Nap

Naps throughout the day can prevent your body from falling into a deep sleep at night. If you need to nap, try to limit your sleep to a 30-minute power nap or less in the afternoon.

Perfect Your Cycle

Going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday can help regulate your sleep pattern. If you need help with sleep regulation, try Vitafusion™ SleepWell* which contains 2.5 mg of Melatonin in each gummy. Melatonin is a hormone your body releases when it gets dark to tell your body it’s time for bed. Vitafusion™ SleepWell* is designed for adults suffering from sleep restrictions or altered sleep schedules (e.g. shift work or jet lag). These gummies provide a tasty alternative to hard-to-swallow tablets. Learn more at gummyvites.ca1

Watch Your Munchies

Take note of what you’re eating and drinking before bed and avoid feeling hungry or stuffed. Stomach and bowel discomfort can make you restless, often causing urgent trips to the washroom in the middle of the night.

Make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive. The life expectancy of a good mattress is around 9 or 10 years so if your mattress is older than this you may want to consider a new one. Ensuring your bed is inviting for sleep is also important. Use comfortable pillows and keep your bed sheets clean and fresh by washing them weekly. Try using Arm & Hammer™ Plus OxiClean™ Power Paks in Fresh Scent that’s boosted with baking soda for a refreshing clean.

Exercise, exercise, exercise! This can be a hard one, especially for those who sit for long hours at a desk. Rigorous exercise is ideal, but even light exercise, like walking to and from work, is better than nothing.

Soothe sore and aching muscles. While exercise can help some sleep soundly, it may also lead to stiff muscles, aches and pains. To help relieve stiff muscles, try using a topical analgesic cream like RUB A535™ Night Time. It is a fast-acting cream that provides soothing relief of muscle and joint pain. Plus, it’s scented with lavender essential oils.

Do you find it difficult to get a full night’s rest? What are some tips you have to help increase total sleep time and quality?
