Managing Summer Chaos

June 19, 2016 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

While kids long for the freedom of summer, it doesn’t quite bring about the same feelings for parents. Juggling children, carpooling to camp and doing household chores with little ones under foot can be overwhelming and lead to a chaotic couple of months.

Below are some great tips to help you manage summer chaos, and enjoy the sunshine as much as possible!

  1. Encourage your children to get off their phones and get outside! In the summer your kids have no excuse but to run around in the backyard and burn off excess energy. Use this time to get to that huge pile of dishes or laundry that has been piling up. To clean all those dirty clothes and remove the grass stains your kids drag in, why not use Arm & Hammer™ Plus OxiClean™ Cold Water Power Paks, an inexpensive and reliable product that will leave your kids clothes looking as good as new.
  1. Stay healthy! Between soccer practice, summer camp and swim lessons summer often means eating quick on-the-go meals. Take L’il Critters™ Gummy Vites™, a complete multivitamin that any kid will love, to ensure your children are getting all of their essential nutrients!
  1. Keep a routine! Ensure you and your children keep a routine during the summer months even if you’ve turned off the alarm clock. Sleeping in and staying up late are great, but will lead to unproductive days. Getting your children excited about boring tasks, like brushing their teeth and completing household chores, will help your children keep a routine during the summer. Arm & Hammer Kid’s Spinbrush and Orajel Flouride and Flouride-Free Toothpastes that tastes great and comes in popular Kids characters such as My Little Pony, Mario, Spiderman and new PAW Patrol to get them brushing all summer long because mom knows when brushing is fun, it gets done.
  1. Get the kids to help with some chores! Having an extra set of hands around the house during the summer can be helpful. Talk with your kids and see what type of chores they can help with – emptying the dishwasher and setting the table are easy tasks that can give you back a few minutes of your day. Having kids fold the laundry is also a great help, and you can trust what they are folding will receive a better overall clean with OxiClean™ Versatile Stain Remover Powder – which boosts your detergent power to get out even the toughest stains.

What are your biggest tips for managing summer chaos?

Keep your kids’ clothes vibrant – pass on the best hand-me-downs!

April 12, 2016 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

Looking at my entry way it seems to be spring again. Spring weather in Calgary can vary a lot so we have everything from vests, to light coats and rain jackets. And we still have all the Winter clothes hanging around too.

It’s definitely time to start putting away the snowpants and sorting through what fits from last year. Kids clothes are expensive so hand-me-downs are one of my favorite things. I always have a bin of too big clothes put away – some that my older kids are passing down and some from other family and friends.

Whether you are keeping your kids’ clothes in the family, giving them away or selling them, it’s important to keep the clothes in good shape. Here are some simple and affordable ways to keep your kid’s clothes in great condition, and hand-me-down ready:

  1. Host a clothing swap. Gather all your friends and have a clothes swap. Everybody can bring their kid’s old clothes that they have either outgrown or are simply tired of. It gives you and your friends the chance to catch-up and socialize while refreshing your kids wardrobe and saving money. Bonus: gather your friends who wear the same size as you do for a clothes swap of your own!
  1. Keep it in the family. At the end of every season, have your children pack away any clothes that are getting too small for them. Label the box with the date and season so in a few years, when your next child is ready for a new outfit, you know exactly where to find them. Make sure to wash everything before you store it away, so that it is clean and fresh when you pull it out of storage. Pro Tip: OxiCleanTM Foam Pre-treat rids your children’s clothes of tough dried on stains – even grease!
  1. Embrace the bold colours. Fun, bright and colourful spring clothes can lose their vibrancy quickly during the year – making it hard to pass them on. The right laundry detergent can go a long way in caring for clothes. Pro Tip: Upgrade from ordinary detergents and give your kids clothes a high definition clean with OxiCleanTM HDTMLaundry Detergent(available in liquid and paks). It will ensure your whites stay radiant and your colours vibrant.

Do you have any great tips for re-using old clothes and saving money?

Helping Canadians Get a Quality Night’s Sleep

March 23, 2016 by danawyyc 1 Comment

Did you know that March 6th to 13th is Sleep Awareness Week? Sleep or the lack of it is always something I end up thinking a lot about when I have a baby in the house. My littlest is now 14 months old and I am finally starting to get better sleep. At least some of the time. But now that I’m slightly less exhausted from my baby, sometimes I have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep and he is not to blame at all!

I hope that you never have trouble getting a good night’s sleep but if you do, below are a list of suggested tips that may help sleepy-eyed Canadians get some quality (and well deserved!) shut-eye.

Keep Calm and Carry On

Make simple changes in your life to help develop a more positive state of mind. Organize, prioritize and give yourself a break every so often. When you have less to worry about, your sleep is less likely to suffer.

Get Up and Get Active

Consider adding daily exercise to your morning routine or sometime in your day. Regular physical activity will help you fall asleep faster and deeper.

Create Tranquility

Make your bedroom a sleeping oasis. Avoid eating, working or watching TV in bed. This way your body will start to associate the bed with meaning it’s time to sleep.

Limit Naps or Power Nap

Naps throughout the day can prevent your body from falling into a deep sleep at night. If you need to nap, try to limit your sleep to a 30-minute power nap or less in the afternoon.

Perfect Your Cycle

Going to bed and waking up at the same time everyday can help regulate your sleep pattern. If you need help with sleep regulation, try Vitafusion™ SleepWell* which contains 2.5 mg of Melatonin in each gummy. Melatonin is a hormone your body releases when it gets dark to tell your body it’s time for bed. Vitafusion™ SleepWell* is designed for adults suffering from sleep restrictions or altered sleep schedules (e.g. shift work or jet lag). These gummies provide a tasty alternative to hard-to-swallow tablets. Learn more at gummyvites.ca1

Watch Your Munchies

Take note of what you’re eating and drinking before bed and avoid feeling hungry or stuffed. Stomach and bowel discomfort can make you restless, often causing urgent trips to the washroom in the middle of the night.

Make sure your mattress is comfortable and supportive. The life expectancy of a good mattress is around 9 or 10 years so if your mattress is older than this you may want to consider a new one. Ensuring your bed is inviting for sleep is also important. Use comfortable pillows and keep your bed sheets clean and fresh by washing them weekly. Try using Arm & Hammer™ Plus OxiClean™ Power Paks in Fresh Scent that’s boosted with baking soda for a refreshing clean.

Exercise, exercise, exercise! This can be a hard one, especially for those who sit for long hours at a desk. Rigorous exercise is ideal, but even light exercise, like walking to and from work, is better than nothing.

Soothe sore and aching muscles. While exercise can help some sleep soundly, it may also lead to stiff muscles, aches and pains. To help relieve stiff muscles, try using a topical analgesic cream like RUB A535™ Night Time. It is a fast-acting cream that provides soothing relief of muscle and joint pain. Plus, it’s scented with lavender essential oils.

Do you find it difficult to get a full night’s rest? What are some tips you have to help increase total sleep time and quality?

February 29th – What are you doing with your extra day?

February 10, 2016 by danawyyc 1 Comment

It is easy to get stuck in a rut. Doing the same routine week after week. Things can seem to busy and hectic that it feels hard to fit anything new in. But this year you have some extra time! Well, sort of anyway. February has an extra day so why not shake things up a bit and try something you haven’t done before with your family?

Snowshoeing or cross country skiing – In many areas you can rent snowshoes or cross country skis for the day making it so you don’t have to spend all the money if you aren’t sure it will be a fit for your family. Both activities are great exercise and if you do invest in the equipment, typically costs almost nothing afterwards.

Build a snow fort – forget about a snowman, build a snowfort in your yard instead. It’ll make the kids want to play outside once you are done and it will be tons of fun to make.

Snow painting – just add a little food coloring to water in a spray bottle and create your own outdoor art. This activity can help even the more ‘indoorsy’ kids want to be outside for a bit.

Go exploring – Find a new outdoor skating rink or toboggan hill. Go to a winter festival or try an attraction in your city that you haven’t before.

Trying to keep up with your kids isn’t always easy – and is often tougher the next day when those aches and pains set in.Topical pain relievers like RUB·A535™ Extra Strength Heating Cream have you covered. It starts to work on contact and provides fast acting pain relief of muscle and joint pain.   Trying something brand new will not only be different and exciting, but will also break up the monotonous schedules we adhere to when juggling work and family. Getting outside is also great for your health!

New Year’s Resolutions: Small Steps with Big Results!

January 11, 2016 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

DSC_0483-001

My baby turned one at the beginning of 2016. I babies are wonderful but I find the disrupted sleep in that first year so hard to handle. Sleep deprivation is not my friend. Now that he’s one though, I’m starting to feel like I have a bit of a handle on things. Since it’s also the start of the new year I am thinking of new beginnings even more.

It’s tempting to try to make a whole bunch of changes all at once. I don’t know about you, but that has never worked for me in the past. Whether it is a new year’s resolution or not, I find that making smaller changes over time are more likely to stick.

Maybe it’s as simple as taking your vitamins. I’m actually doing really well with that this year since I switched over to gummy vitamins like Vitafusion™ Men’s & Women’s Complete Multivitamins. Gummy vitamins work really well for the kids too because they want to take them so help me remember.

This year I’m looking at other small things that I can do to improve my health. Like being less efficient.

For real.

I find that generally I always try to find the most efficient way to do something so I can cut down the time it takes to do it. But this year I am trying to dial that back in effort to walk more. I’m parking at the back of the lot, taking the long way around at the mall and walking my son to school. I got a fit bit this year at Christmas and am trying to get in my 10,000 steps. Right now sometimes I do and sometimes I really really don’t.

The other thing I am doing is prioritizing exercise. I find it really easy to put this last on my list. I am not an athlete, I would usually rather read a book. But I know I feel better when I exercise so I am trying to put that first on my list instead of last. I’ve found a yoga series I really like called 30 Days of Yoga with Adriene which is free on youtube! I love that the routines change every day but I don’t have to put in a lot of effort to decide what to do next. I just put on the next video. My current strategy is to do it as soon as my youngest goes down for his first nap. If for some reason I miss it I try to do it right after the kids go to sleep. It’s starting to feel my part of my routine and I really hope I can keep it up.

Orange Is the New Black in Calgary – Unique Gift Idea

December 16, 2015 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

Do you have someone on your Christmas list this year that you are at a loss for what to get them? Or maybe someone keeps asking you what’s on your list this year and you can’t think of anything. This may be just the thing you were looking for.

OitNB paperback[2]

Orange is the New Black author Piper Kerman is going to be speaking at an event on April 14, 2016! This would make a perfect gift for the OITNB fan on your list. Piper Kerman is not only the author of the book, but the book is a memoir of her experiences in Women’s prison and the inspiration for the Netflix TV series. I’ve heard that she is an excellent speaker and funny too.

“The View from Behind Bars an evening with Piper Kerman at MacLeod Hall in Calgary”, also includes a silent auction plus an option to buy premium seating to the event which includes a signed copy of Piper’s book “Orange is the new Black, my year in Women’s Prison”.

Piper Kerman-Sam Zalutsky Spiegel and Grau[3] (1)

But this event will not only be entertaining, it is also raising money for a great cause. The Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary (EFRY) is a non-profit organization that has been helping women and youth who are dealing with the legal and justice system for over 50 years. They provide practical programs, basic necessities and connections to community resources with the goal of creating more hopeful futures.

The money raised from this event, “The View Behind Bars – An Evening with Piper Kerman”  will go to the Elizabeth Fry Society of Calgary’s prison to community transition programs.

OITNB TV tie-in cover s. 3 (1)

I’ve really enjoyed watching OITNB – my favorite parts are the backstories. It really helps illustrate how often common themes of poverty abuse, trauma and addiction are to the women who end up engaged with the justice system and how without help these cycles could just keep repeating.

The show also gives you a bit of an idea of how hard it would be to start over and transition back into society. The Elizabeth Fry Society tries to help ease this transition through practical support.

Tickets are on sale now so go grab a couple for that tricky person on your list – your sister, or sister-in-law, friend or mother-  and cross them off. Or drop a big hint about what you would like this year by sending this link.

For 50 years, Elizabeth Fry has offered a hand up to thousands of women in the Calgary community, providing practical programs, basic necessities and connections to community resources, all with the goal of creating more hopeful futures.

Testing out PAM’s new no-residue cooking spray

December 10, 2015 by danawyyc 2 Comments

I love cooking (well unless I am totally sleep deprived) but I do not love cleaning up afterwards (no matter how much sleep I get). That’s why I like to use a cooking spray – less stuff sticking to the pan mean less time I end up having to spend scrubbing. Or re-running my pans through the dishwasher.

What I do not love is that sticky residue that cooking sprays can end up leaving behind on the pans. So when PAM cooking spray asked me to test out their new No-residue formula against a competitor spray, I said absolutely. I was honestly a little skeptical that I would find anything particularly noteworthy.

Pam No residue

First I tried it out on some eggs I made in mini-muffin tins. I used PAM on the ones on the right and the competitor on the ones on the left. I think a few things are pretty clear from this picture.
1. I cannot eyeball how many eggs I need to fill two mini-muffin trays
2. I over fill my muffin trays
3. PAM absolutely left less residue than the competitor.

Pam No-residue

I decided to grab a recipe and try the eggs again. The PAM is again on the right and the competitor is on the left. From these photos you can see that:
1. Filling mini-muffin trays with eggs is hard
2. It gets dark too early and the lighting in my kitchen is terrible and
3. PAM again left less of that dark sticky residue than the competitor.

PAM no-residue

I decided that perhaps eggs in mini muffin trays are not for me and made some brownies in honor of National Brownie Day. For research purposes. I made them from a mix because they are shockingly easy to make from a mix but still delicious and I am currently sleep deprived due to my sweet little 11 month old so the only cooking I am doing is lazy cooking.

PAM no-residue

The pan I used PAM on was again on the right and the competitor was on the left. Although both brownies were easy to remove from the pan, the PAM left way less sticky residue.

PAM no-residue

Here is a closer look at the back. I honestly was impressed. That sticky residue has been my biggest complaint with cooking sprays. The people at PAM say that this effect is even more pronounced over time. Pans used with PAM no-residue will continue to stay very clean looking wash after wash whereas pans use other cooking sprays with continue to collect residue over time.

I am participating in the PAM No Residue blog comparison program with enCompass Media. I’ve received payment as a thank you for participating and sharing my honest opinion.

Winter Holidays: A Guide to Fun!

December 1, 2015 by danawyyc Leave a Comment

sledding

When the forecast is calling for snow, snow and more snow, don’t fight it, get out there and enjoy all that winter has to offer.

Tobogganing

Grab a sled and trek to the top of that perfectly powdered hill.  Tobogganing is a great family activity that everyone can enjoy; nothing beats the thrill of sliding down a snowy white hill. What’s your toboggan of choice? The classic wooden style? The faster and more unpredictable flying saucer, or maybe a sleek crazy carpet?

Skating

For a calmer experience, a nice skate around a local outdoor rink is a great way to enjoy an afternoon outdoors with your kids.

Snowshoeing

If the snow is particularly deep, why not try snowshoeing? Modern snowshoes are inexpensive, snap onto all boots and are a fun and interesting way to walk across deep snow without sinking. In fact, snowshoes are a great way to get to the top of a toboggan hill safely and quickly.

Snow Fort

If staying closer to home seems more appealing, building a snow fort with the kids in the yard is a classic winter activity.  Packing snow into bread tins is fun way to make snow bricks for building the best fortress on the block.

When playing in the snow, there’s bound to be slips and falls, and not every toboggan run ends in a fluffy pile of snow, but that’s part of the fun. So when your day is done reach for Rub A535™ to soothe and relax tense muscles so you can do it all over again tomorrow.  For the little ones, natural source Rub A535™ Maximum Strength Arnica Gel-Cream is an effective all natural product that makes it the ideal treatment for bumps, bruises and swelling and it’s great for when you’re on the go. When you’re all warmed up at home, you can top off a fun day in the snow, with a nice cup of hot chocolate!

Why LEGO makes me happy – #HappyMomMoments

November 16, 2015 by danawyyc 5 Comments

My little boy is not so little anymore. He started grade one this year and has become so independent.

Lego #happymommoments 1

He’s learning to read and follow directions and create things from his imagination too.

LEGO #HappyMomMoments 2

He used to need so much help. And now he’s the one helping his baby brother and little sister.

LEGO - #HappyMomMoments 3

One of the ways I can really see this is with LEGO. Although he still loves playing with DUPLO, he’s mastered building with it and is ready to take on more.

LEGO - #HappyMomMoments 4

The LEGO Juniors sets are perfect for him now. They are easier to build than regular LEGO sets because they are less complex making it a great bridge from DUPLO to LEGO. They are also less fragile because they don’t use as many pieces to make each element.

LEGO #HappyMomMoments 5

He could spend hours building and creating. I love seeing the look on his face while he’s so focused on what he’s doing.

LEGO #HappyMomMoments 6

His ability to concentrate is really impressive. Check out this video for a cute example.

His imaginative play is really flourishing now too. The trucks don’t just drive back and forth. They have places to go and jobs to do.

LEGO #HappyMomMoments 7

He’s growing in other ways too. The other day he told me that he was going to save up his allowance for Christmas presents. He wanted to buy the LEGO Cinderella castle for his sister and the DUPLO train for his baby brother. As well as getting a nice set for himself of course. He does not get nearly that much allowance! But it was such a generous thought that it almost made me cry. That was a real proud mom moment for me.

This post has been brought to you in thanks to the generosity of JimJam Communications. As always, all opinions expressed are my own and I’m thrilled to share with you why Lego is such a big part of my kids’ childhood.

Hosting Thanksgiving dinner for Tired Moms – 4 Tips to Cut the Effort not the Taste

October 16, 2015 by danawyyc 1 Comment

I love hosting our big family meals. Both my husband and I have fairly small families so we are able to fit both sides comfortably in our small house. I find hosting thanksgiving dinner to be a little overwhelming though, particularly with a baby and two small kids. But over the years I’ve figured out a few things to make everything a little easier and less stressful.

Easy sausage stuffing

1. Instead of cooking one big turkey cook two smaller birds

Getting the timing right is one of the hardest parts of meals like Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners. My biggest stress reliever has been to cook two turkeys. I cook one the night before and put the drippings in the fridge. This way even if the day of turkey is late, we can still eat on time. After the drippings have been sitting in the fridge overnight, it is easy to take the fat off the top and you don’t have to wait until the last minute to make the gravy.

2. If you are going to try something new, pick something easy

I have heard over and over again to not try out new recipes for the first time on Thanksgiving. But I do it every single time and more often than not it works out. I highly recommend that everything is not riding on your new recipe though. Try out a new side dish or vegetable. If it doesn’t work out, you can just abandon it and there is no harm done. This year Echelon foods offered me a bacon wrapped turducken to try out. It is a deboned chicken, inside a deboned duck inside a deboned turkey stuffed with sausage. Since I made a turkey the night before, I felt confident in trying something new and looking over the directions, it could hardly be easier. It was a lot of fun to try and all I had to do was defrost and stick it in the oven. The flavour of the stuffing really affects the taste and aroma of the meat so make sure you pick something you like if you want to try it too.

Echelon Foods Bacon Wrapped Turducken

3. Don’t try to do everything yourself

Even though I’m hosting, we share the work. My mother and sister in law take care of the cooked vegetables, my mom handles the salad and pickled vegetables and my brother is always good for a last minute trip to the grocery store or some help in the kitchen right before dinner. I always make sure someone is available to come over early to help me with the kids while I am finishing up in the kitchen.

Echelon Foods Bacon Wrapped Turducken

4. Don’t be afraid to take some short cuts

Not everything you are doing needs to be 100% from scratch every year. Figure out what is important and what isn’t for your family. I have a friend who grabs gravy from KFC and many people will grab a pouch from the grocery store instead of making it from scratch. I had tried many different stuffing recipes but found my husband always like Stove Top Stuffing best. So now I just make that instead of spending time trying to make my own stuffing. Sometimes I make it straight up, but I also like to add things to it so it feels homemade even though it only took a few minutes to make. This year I modified my friend’s family recipe for sausage stuffing – it was super easy, fast and good too! Check out the recipe below.

Super Easy Sausage Stuffing
Recipe type: Stuffing

Ingredients
  • 3 Boxes of Stove Top Stuffing
  • 1-2 tubes of sausage meat (Maple Leaf sausage meat is what my friend recommends)
  • a couple stalks of celery
  • an onion or two
  • butter for the Stove Top
Instructions
  1. Cook up the sausage meat, drain and crumble. This can be done the day before.
  2. Chop celery and onion and saute until onion softens.
  3. Cook Stove Top Stuffing according to package directions.
  4. Mix together.
3.2.2925

Those are my best tips! What do you do to keep Thanksgiving manageable?
